Furnace Maintenance FAQs for Chicago Homes
Is Furnace Maintenance Worth It?
Routine annual furnace maintenance provides your system with the care and cleaning it needs in order to counteract wear, tear, and debris accumulation. The service yields very high returns as an investment, and goes a long way in reducing the risk that you’ll encounter a breakdown or expensive component replacement down the line. In short, you’ll pay less long-term, and get a lot more comfort from your system.
What Is a Furnace Maintenance Plan?
A furnace maintenance plan, also called a maintenance agreement, is an ongoing contract with your HVAC service provider. Generally a plan includes annual furnace maintenance, and often annual AC maintenance as well. Plans frequently carry additional perks such as loyalty benefits, priority service, discounts, and other advantages. If you intend to keep up with furnace maintenance like you should, a maintenance plan is your best value.
How Often Should I Change My Furnace Air Filter?
Every one to two months is ideal, depending on the type of furnace air filter you use. If your household is larger, or you have pets, we strongly recommend monthly. Healthy airflow translates to better heating power, more efficient and cost-effective heating, and an overall longer life span for your furnace.
What Type of Furnace Air Filter Should I Use?
The simplest and most standard MERV furnace filters or HVAC filters are fiberglass. These are inexpensive and widely available, making them the common choice. However, there are also pleated polyester filters. These cost a bit more, but tend to last substantially longer, easing the need to replace as often. They also result in better furnace efficiency, as they bolster airflow by removing more dust and dander from the air.
There are also HEPA filters, but we strongly recommend against using these. HEPA filters are designed for commercial HVAC use, such as in an industrial or hospital setting. Residential systems are constrained by the finer mesh, which can result in overheating and extensive damage.
Will Air Duct Cleaning Make My Furnace Perform Better?
Provided your ducts haven’t been cleaned recently, a duct cleaning can absolutely improve the performance of your heating system. NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) suggests duct cleaning every 3-5 years depending on your home. Duct cleaning is also recommended any time you move into a new home.
