Troubleshooting Basic Dishwasher Problems
Not every problem with your dishwasher is going to require professional help to identify or solve—some, you’ll be able to resolve on your own in no time.
Dishes won’t dry properly
This usually results from washing your dishes without a rinse aid, especially if your kitchen runs a bit humid or cool and your dishwasher doesn’t use heated drying. Rinse aids work to make sure water evaporates thoroughly and quickly from your dishes after the cycle is completed.
Dishwasher isn’t draining
Drainage problems can be sourced to a lot of different problems, some affecting other areas of your drainage, but one of the most typical problems relates to adjacent garbage disposals. During installation, a knockout plug needs to be removed in order for your dishwasher to drain through the garbage disposal area correctly. If this is the case, you’ll need a professional to help, but whoever installed your dishwasher or disposal should be able to come back and resolve it. You might also have problems with buildup in your garbage disposal, if you put the wrong foods down it or don’t run it thoroughly with water.
Spots or film on dishes
Spots on dishes usually mean hard water, or water with minerals in it, combined with not using a rinse aid. If you’re using a rinse aid and you still see spots, you may have especially hard water and need a specialized dish detergent for hard water to soften the water properly and allow complete rinsing.
Taking too long to run
There are a few reasons your dishwasher may take too long. If your system is installed a decent distance from your hot water heater, then it may simply need to run for a while to clear cold water from the pipes and begin washing in earnest; you can test this by running a kitchen tap until the water goes hot, then starting the dishwasher and comparing the time. Otherwise, it could be a high-efficiency setting or design, which run longer than older less efficient models you may be familiar with, or you may have additional features turned on that lengthen the cycle, such as special sanitation or drying options.
Particles on dishes
Food particles on your dishes can result from overloading your dishwasher, from loading your dishwasher improperly so that rinsing doesn’t work, or from a dirty filter. If your dishes feel gritty or dirty without large recognizable particles, a filter problem is most likely. You’ll need to check your owner’s manual to find out whether it can be resolved without professional assistance.
